About the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo
The Red-tailed Black Cockatoo is a large black cockatoo native to Australia. It has a crest that forms a helmet when the bird raises it and pushes it forward. The adult males have a characteristic pair of bright red panels on the tail that gives the species its name. The female has duller plumage with yellow spots on her head, wings and neck. Red-tailed black cockatoos are around 60 cm in length and weighs about 600 grams. They mainly eat seeds, but also fruit, berries, nectar, flowers and sometimes insects and larvae. Red-tailed Black Cockatoos lay one white egg, or sometimes two eggs, in tree hollows lined with wood dust and splinters. The black cockatoos have a lifespan of 45 to 50 years in captivity.
