- One of the best known and loved sauropod dinosaurs, Diplodocus, lived 154-152 million years ago in the Late Jurassic era. It inhabited the area now known as Mid-Western North America. Its name means 'double-beamed reptile' in reference to the double beamed chevron bones located in the underside of the tail, which were then considered unique. Its extremely long tail is thought to have been used as a whiplash and defense against such predators such as Allosaurus and Ceratosaurus with whom it shared its world.
